The slum youth habits include smoking practically anything to chewing GUTKHA (a tobacco derivative, highly addictive & carcinogenic). Its media created image as a mouth freshener ensures its easy availability and low cost sachets - makes it affordable to most in the slum. It suppresses hunger and so their parents get them hooked on to it at as early as 5-7 years.
We have seen kids who cannot fully open their mouths due to the constant chewing of gutkha and has led to lockjaw. We are trying to combat this addiction by linking sports with a healthy body which means diverting use of meager financial resources from harmful wastage and converting the same into consumption which is beneficial health wise.
