More about Shape the Community Sport Development Project
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) believes that sport can be an effective tool to help achieve goals in health, education, gender equality, HIV/AIDS, child protection and child development. Currently Trinidad and Tobago’s population is plagued by an increase in social problems and related issues that affect our communities.
Incidents of lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and obesity, increased crime, teenage pregnancy and poor academic performance have all impacted negatively on our nation. Involvement in sport and physical activity at a young age can provide children with an opportunity to become engaged in their community, develop a sense of inclusion amongst their peers, enhance self-esteem, engage in healthy lifestyle behaviours for the prevention of chronic diseases and build life skills such as social, communication and team work skills.
Furthermore, the TTOC maintains that the goal of its programs must be the empowerment of the community by strengthening of their capacities. Through training of community coaches in the area to deliver sporting programs, the Shape the Community program helps to not only tackle social issues by developing skills in young children, but also to increase the capacity of community members.
