More about School of Hard Knocks
For many of our participants, just helping them to look for a job is simply not enough: for some there is an almost complete lack of self belief that they can achieve positive things in life; for others there is often very little desire to actively seek work in the first place. Therefore, through the disciplines inherent in the game of Rugby Union, we try to instil a sense of responsibility, personal pride and aspiration. They quickly realise the value of team work and diversity and learn to access ways of maintaining discipline and control when under pressure.
An increasing number of our participants have criminal records for possession of weapons that they often confess to having no real intent to use. The physical confidence we give them on the rugby pitch helps them realise that they don’t have to hide behind a knife.
In short, playing and training for the game with intensity often leads to participants embracing and maintaining a healthy and socially positive lifestyle. Regular training room sessions plus visits to adventure training sites, professional rugby team training sessions and days with army recruitment teams, all combine to make a high impact and life changing experience.
