More about San Francisco 49ers Academy
The San Francisco 49ers Academy – a school for low income middle school youth – not only bears the name of the 49ers football team but it also is indelibly stamped with the spirit of this storied franchise. Recognizing the significant challenges faced by youth in the economically and socially disadvantaged community of East Palo Alto and seeing an opportunity to make a measurable difference in the lives of these youth, since 1996 the San Francisco 49ers Foundation has supported the 49ers Academy by giving significant grants while also providing direct, hands on support in the form of tremendous player/alumni /ownership/staff involvement, collaborative activities and events, 100s tickets to games, mentorship, school facility enhancement, and generous donations for the annual fundraising Gala.
Additionally, the youth at the Academy are highly at risk for obesity and the 49ers have incorporated the PLAY 60 youth fitness program into the curriculum at the Academy to increase the students overall health and well-being. In 2010 alone, the San Francisco 49ers Foundation provided $285,201 in contributions including $50,000 in directed funding to support the annual operating expenses of the Academy. The 49ers also supported three sports-related events and funded new physical education uniforms and athletic gear.
