More about Safeguarding Children in ‘Sport for Social Impact’: using soccer to bring child protection policies to life in disparate communities worldwide.
Child abuse in sport is universal. Often a manifestation of predominant cultural norms, such abuse spans a continuum, ranging from ‘culturally embedded violence’ towards children in some developing countries to ‘performance pressure’ in first world countries.
Soccer speaks a universal language. A football is a magnet for children worldwide. Across the globe children and young people leave huts, favelas, urban streets and the rural bush to play football. Coaches Across Continents utilizes this passion for soccer to motivate, educate and empower local coaches around the world to protect child rights, safeguard young people and create safe spaces in which they can take part in soccer games designed for social impact.
CAC’s curriculum has both on and off field components. On-field games teach footballing skills whilst simultaneously addressing important social issues, in this case, child abuse in sport. Child abuse games are designed to address local child protection concerns and identify potential solutions. In addition, the way in which the games are taught embodies safeguarding strategies. The style of coaching illustrates “good safeguarding practice’. The medium is the message.
